49ers jerseys agreed to a three-year, $73.5 million wholesale contract extension with star wide receiver Deebo Samuel, $58.1 million of which is guaranteed.
Many wide receivers have been offered wholesale jerseys contract extensions this season, and apparently Samuel is one of them. When he reported to training camp on Tuesday, both head coach Kyle Shanahan and general manager John Lynch had indicated that the extension would be completed shortly.
Samuel’s receiving tandem with teammate George Kittle is one of the best in the league. Both of their contracts are currently set to expire in 2025, and they will also help the 49ers make a smooth transition of adding Jimmy Garoppolo to Trey Lance.
Samuel was selected by the 49ers in the second round of the 2019 draft and had shown some talent in the first two years of his career, appearing in 22 games in 2 years, rushing for 1,193 yards receiving and 185 yards rushing.
However, last season was Samuel’s breakout season, as he spent the first half of the season at wide receiver and the second half of the season rushing the ball at running back under Shanahan’s system. In the 16 games he played, he finished with 77 receptions, rushed for 1,405 yards and six receiving touchdowns, and finished with 59 rushing attempts, rushed for 365 yards and eight rushing touchdowns. His outstanding performance also helped him to be selected for the first time in his career.
Whether Samuel will still be involved in the rushing attack after the contract extension is completed remains a question. The 49ers already have three running backs in the rotation: Elijah Mitchell, a sixth-round pick last season, has been outstanding, Jeff Wilson Jr. will also be eligible for the rotation, and Trey Sermon, a fourth-round pick last season, has been playing well in training camp.
But what is certain at this point is this: regardless of where he appears on the field, Samuel will also be playing for the 49ers jersey for the next little while.
